Costs and savings
How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
Energy Saving Trust gives around £7,600 as a guide for a typical 4.5 kWp home solar panel installation. Your quote will depend on the system and the work your home needs; a battery is an additional cost.

A starting point for your budget
The £7,600 figure is Energy Saving Trust’s published benchmark, checked on 20 September 2026. It is not a VERA price or a promise that your home will cost the same. Use it to start a budget conversation, then compare written quotes for the same scope.
What should a solar installation quote include?
Ask for the panel count and models, inverter, mounting system, access or scaffolding, electrical work and commissioning to be listed. Note any roof repairs or other exclusions beside the total. This gives you a practical checklist when one proposal looks much cheaper than another.
What changes the price for your home?
Ask the installer to explain the difference between the equipment price and the work needed at your property. For example, does the proposal cover one roof face or several? Is access straightforward? Does the electrical work include everything identified during the survey? A price per panel cannot answer those questions.
What if I want a battery too?
Request two versions of the same proposal: solar on its own and solar with storage. That makes the extra battery cost visible and lets you compare its additional benefit, rather than comparing two completely different systems.
Compare the total, not just the monthly payment
If you are considering finance, put the total amount repayable next to the cash installation price. Keep running-cost estimates separate from the purchase price. A projected bill saving is an assumption in the comparison, not a reduction in the amount the installer charges.
