Costs and savings
Are solar panels worth it? Costs, savings and payback
Solar panels can be worthwhile when the electricity they generate provides enough value to justify the installation cost. Compare your roof’s potential, expected bill savings and export income with the full price and ongoing costs.

Start with the home, not a promised return
Ask for the proposed panel layout, estimated annual generation and the assumptions behind the financial benefit. Keep your annual electricity use and current tariff alongside the proposal. A useful comparison lets you see which numbers describe your home and which are assumptions.
How long do solar panels take to pay for themselves?
Simple payback is the upfront cost divided by an assumed annual financial benefit. For illustration, £8,000 divided by £800 a year is ten years; the same cost divided by £500 is sixteen years. These are arithmetic examples, not VERA quotes or predicted outcomes. They show why the savings assumptions matter.
What simple payback misses
A basic calculation holds the annual benefit constant and leaves out the timing of money. For a fuller comparison, ask how the proposal handles maintenance, replacement equipment, finance costs and changing electricity prices. A system may keep producing after its simple payback date, but that date is not guaranteed.
Is solar still worth it if I am out during the day?
Ask for a scenario that reflects your routine rather than assuming every unit is used at home. Compare the value of exports, any electricity use you can reasonably move, and the extra cost of storage. Being out during the day is a reason to examine the assumptions, not to accept or reject solar without a calculation.
Assess a battery as an extra decision
If adding a battery increases the quote, compare that extra cost with the extra annual benefit. A combined system’s total savings can make the battery appear better value than it is when most of the benefit would have come from the panels anyway.
Decide what matters to you
Alongside the figures, consider whether you expect to stay in the home, your plans for electricity use and your reasons for choosing solar. Start with VERA’s address-based assessment, then compare a written installation proposal against your budget and priorities.
