Costs and savings
Solar battery storage costs in the UK: what to budget
Energy Saving Trust gives around £4,600 as a guide for a 5 kWh battery system. Your installed price depends on the equipment and the job, so compare the usable capacity and included work as well as the total.

How much does a solar battery cost?
Energy Saving Trust’s battery guide, checked on 20 September 2026, puts battery systems across a broad £1,500–£10,000 range and gives around £4,600 for a 5 kWh system. These are reference figures, not VERA prices. The cheapest end of a broad range is not a budget for every home.
Make sure you are comparing installed prices
Write down what each quote includes: the battery model, usable capacity, inverter or controller, fitting, electrical work and any optional backup equipment. Ask the company to identify exclusions. An equipment-only price and a fully fitted proposal answer different questions.
Compare capacity and power separately
Think of capacity in kWh as the amount of energy that can be stored, and power in kW as the rate at which it can be supplied. Ask the installer to show both on the proposal. Two batteries described as the same size may still offer different usable capacities or power limits.
A simple way to compare two proposals
Suppose one fictional installed quote is £4,000 for 5 kWh usable storage and another is £6,000 for 10 kWh. They work out at £800 and £600 per usable kWh respectively. That does not make the larger battery the better purchase: the extra £2,000 still needs a purpose in your household. These examples explain the comparison and are not market prices or offers.
Ask what the extra storage would earn or save
Request the modelled annual benefit of each option on the same tariff and usage assumptions. Keep savings from the panels separate from the battery’s additional contribution. If a larger battery adds only a small benefit, the lower price per kWh may not justify the higher total.
Buying now or adding storage later
If you are considering solar and a battery together, ask for the package price and a solar-only alternative. If adding storage to existing panels, ask the installer to confirm compatibility before relying on a headline price. Also request the warranty terms and what a future replacement would involve.
