Roof suitability

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

A roof may be suitable for solar if it has useful unshaded space, an appropriate structure and a practical installation route. A remote assessment helps with the first question; a survey must confirm the others.

Start with usable space

The whole roof is not necessarily available for panels. Edges, rooflights, chimneys and adjoining properties can reduce the area that can be used. The arrangement matters too: a large irregular patch may fit fewer panels than a smaller clear rectangle. Ask to see a proposed layout rather than just an area figure.

Consider light and condition

Compass direction, roof incline and surrounding shade influence generation. Roof condition is a separate issue. An attractive generation estimate cannot tell you whether ageing tiles need replacement or whether the structure can support the proposed installation.

Turn suitability into a decision

Use the assessment to identify promising roof faces and questions for an installer. Then check access, electrical arrangements and any permissions. VERA can assess available roof data and save your request for a tailored quote; it does not remotely certify the roof as safe to build on.
