Batteries and home energy
Can solar panels help charge an electric car?
Solar can contribute to electric-car charging, especially when the car is at home during generation. It does not guarantee that every journey can be powered directly from the roof.

Match charging time to generation
If the car is away during sunny hours, direct solar charging opportunities may be limited. A charger with suitable controls can respond to available surplus, but charging capability also depends on the vehicle, charger and installation.
Distinguish annual energy from daily supply
An annual solar total equivalent to a certain amount of driving is an illustration. It does not mean the same energy is available whenever the car needs charging. Winter generation, other household loads and charging losses matter.
Include the whole installation
Tell the installer about the vehicle, charging location and usual schedule. Electrical supply and cable routes may need checking at survey. VERA’s roof assessment helps estimate the generation side of the picture; a useful quote should connect it to how you actually charge.
